Go to Sleep in the TARDIS

From blasr.com:
A New Zealand craftsman built this Doctor Who-inspired Murphy bed for his son, and now he's auctioning it off. If you want to dream in relative dimensions in space, then get to bidding.

The police light works, LEDs pulse, the telephone talks—TALKS!—and shines a Southern Cross on the ceiling. Granted, you've gotta ship it from New Zealand, but for the geek parent who needs the perfect bed for his geek kid—or the nerd Casanova who wants to make the Earth move—there's really no other option.

But hurry up: the auction ends on Dec. 9.

SFX Talks to Matt Smith

Matt Smith told SFX that his role is a "constant reference" when dealing with difficult situations.

"When I'm getting stressed about something, about a phone call or e-mail or whatever, I... try and be more like him," Smith explained. "He always gives people a chance. And I really have learnt a lot about myself from playing him, because when you spend time with someone who's so good, [you start] thinking in those patterns and those ways."

Smith also named Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat as another inspiration, describing the writer as "heroic".

"I definitely feel as though he's writing more and more for me," he claimed. "Which is really rewarding, to have a writer of that calibre writing for you. The rapidity and the craft with which he produces these scripts is quite heroic, I think."

Was Doctor Who behind UK space agency logo?

The logo on the right was used in Doctor Who.

From thetelegraph.co.uk: The £10,000 logo was unveiled by Lord Drayson, the science minister, and Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, to herald the opening of the department which is Britain’s answer to NASA.

However, the pattern of a red arrow pointing towards the corner of a Union Flag is similar to one used for the television show's Space Rocket Group, which featured in a Christmas special three years ago.

Alan Pettigrew, 41, a Doctor Who fan, told The Sun newspaper yesterday: “To say there's a similarity between the two logos is an understatement.”

Folio Creative, the space agency’s logo designers, insisted: “There is barely a passing resemblance.

“It is inevitable if you combine the Union Flag with a space theme. We are delighted the logo has been well received.”

BBC Behind Doctor Who

Walesonline is reporting: David Tennant's popular tenure of the Tardis may have ended but the BBC last night said it remains “hugely committed” to the Doctor Who brand.

The Scottish star’s final outing as the Time Lord attracted more than 10 million viewers on New Year’s Day.

But it also marked the end of an era for the popular sci-fi series, as writer Russell T Davies joined Tennant in severing their links with Doctor Who.

The pair have been integral to the show’s recent success and have been widely hailed for reviving a sleeping giant.

Matt Smith, a 27-year-old Englishman, has taken over as the 11th Doctor.

Tennant’s final appearance on New Year’s Day was the show’s third most viewed installment, but BBC chiefs yesterday predicted an even brighter future for the Doctor.

Julian Payne, head of communications at BBC Vision, told the Western Mail it was a “fantastically exciting” time for fans.

“Doctor Who has regeneration at its very core, and it’s what provides the show with its longevity,” he said.

“We view it as a very exciting opportunity for the show. We remain hugely committed to the brand of Doctor Who in all its forms, and we have a wonderful new team in place who are very excited about taking the show on new adventures.”

New Who Logo

From the Official BBC Doctor Who site: Doctor Who has engaged and amazed a global audience for over forty years, constantly raising the bar and regenerating to deliver new and compelling adventures. It's all change again in 2010 with Matt Smith playing the Eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan onboard as companion Amy Pond and a brilliant, brand new logo!
On one level, the logo is the iconic image that represents Doctor Who. But it's much more than that - it becomes an icon that is recognised from Cardiff to California, an emblem of excitement, humour, scary monsters, brave companions and the Doctor! And so the new logo must be stylish, fresh, distinctive and bold. Must be. And will be. See for yourself when we reveal it exclusively, on their site at 8am on Tuesday, 6th October!

Another Place in Guinness

Variety.com: On Sunday, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized "Doctor Who" as the most successful sci-fi series. "It is too good a show to have just one record," said Guinness editor in chief Craig Glenday.
Guinness granted the award on the basis of broadcast ratings, DVD sales, book sales and iTunes traffic. "It's hard to quantify illegal downloads, but we included those as well," Glenday said.
Longevity was another factor, since "Doctor Who" also holds the Guinness record for longest-running sci-fi TV series. A controversy broke out over that record in 2006, and "Stargate SG-1" later received the record for longest-running consecutive sci-fi series after completing a 10-year run.
"I can hear Comic-Con war breaking out there," said showrunner Russell T. Davies, who accepted the honor on behalf of Dr Who creator Verity Lambert.
"Doctor Who" premiered November 23, 1963. The one-hour Dr. Who special, "Planet of the Dead," premieres July 26 on BBC America.

David Back After Back Surgery

David Tennant, 37, was photographed on a trip to the local shops near his North London home.
The actor was wrapped up against the cold in a stripey scarf not dissimilar to the one worn by Tom Baker's Doctor Who in the 1970s.
The pictures of Tennant out and about will be a welcome sight for fans awaiting his return to the stage.
He underwent surgery for a prolapsed disc last week, spelling disappointment for thousands who paid to see him in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet at London's Novello Theatre. Tickets for the run sold out in a single day and the RSC is not offering refunds.
