On the eve of the 3rd series beginning, I’m taking time to look back on the season that preceded it. The 2006 series without a doubt was a triumph in science fiction television, with standout episodes like The Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. And who could forget Sarah Jane Smith’s return in such a well written story. Even the Idiot’s Lantern harked back to classic Doctor Who episodes of old. And who could deny the episodic music that stood out, like the theme for the Face of Boe and aforementioned The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit.
My praise might be one sided, I love Doctor Who that is for sure, though there are a few things I could have done without in the 2006 series, the Doctor kissing, (Come on people it seems like the Doctor will snog anything human or otherwise.), and poorly conceived episodes like Love and Monsters and Fear Her. I even have grown tired of the sexual tension between the Doctor and Rose and the every other gay references that have no place in a show like Doctor Who. I know you’re gay Russell T. Davis, but quit shoving it down our throat, I’m happy for you and respect everyone’s privacy and choice, but I don’t care if you’re gay or not, just stop using Doctor Who as a message board for it.
All though with my gripes about some things in the 2006 series I have to say I’m so excited about the 2007 series and the great possibilities that it will have to offer us in the 13 episodes to come. The journey of a lifetime continues.
