Fans Save Babylon 5

Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski revealed some surprising news about the upcoming Lost Tales film - when Warner Brothers lost the computer discs containing the original effects images from the show, the production crew was at a loss as to how they would re-create everything from scratch without delaying the film. Until Straczynski came up with a plan - "I pointed out that a lot of fans out there over the years built their own models of our ships and the station and everything else. So they went out to all these different sites to find high-resolution models and wireframes and texture mattes and so on that they could then take and start building from. So it kind of closed the loop in the sense that Babylon 5 created these images and gave them to the fans, and now the fans have given them back to us."... In fact, it may have been a boon to the movie that the discs were lost. Visual effects technology has grown by leaps and bounds since 1998 (when the show ended). Starting from scratch allowed for even better effects with this film. According to Straczynski, the station and ships were never shown at too much of a close-up in the series because the technology at the time simply didn't allow it. But, "on this DVD, we really had some pane-scrapers [shots that got close to ships]. We get right in there. And the degree of resolution of detail is terrific." In this, the first Lost Tales movie, President Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) is heading off to an important meeting on the station. The DVD hits shelves on July 31.

Babylon 5: Lost Tales July 31st

The wait is over for Babylon 5 fans - the long-awaited B5 movie will hit shelves July 31, and fans are eager to get their copy of Babylon 5: The Lost Tales - Voices in the Dark. Series star Bruce Boxleitner reprised his role of Sheridan in the film, which he first heard about from a fan in London. While he at first dismissed the teasing rumors of a B5 movie, when he got a call from producer Doug Netter he knew the rumors were true at last.
Boxleitner admitted he was angry when the show ended,... and sci-fi television hasn't been the same for him since. "People may yell at me for saying that, but we were definitely influential, and there really isn't anything set in outer space anymore," Boxleitner said. "The last of the Star Treks went off air, and it looks like this season of ['Battlestar Galactica'] will be the last. Maybe we'll fill that gap a little bit. A television series becomes a family, and we were a really tight-knit group. We've lost three people, including two of our prominent cast members [Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar), who died in 2006, and Richard Biggs (Dr. Stephen Franklin), who died in 2004], but I think we've handled that very well, with a mention of both those characters in 'The Lost Tales.'”
The film was shot in Vancouver, using a green-screen stage and a small crew. But, some things did stay the same - Boxleitner was able to use his old wardrobe in the film. Other returning characters include Col. Lochley (Tracy Scoggins) and Galen (Peter Woodward). If the DVD performs well, series creator J. Michael Straczynski plans to make more films based on the series. The next could be released as early as next year, and rumored storylines include a Garibaldi-focused film or the Telepath War. SO BUY THIS DVD!
