Doctor Who Cinema Adverts criticized

TELEVISION viewers have attacked the BBC for spending up to £500,000 on cinema adverts promoting the award-winning Dr Who series.
Claims have been made that the programme, which has been filmed in Cardiff for the past four years, is already so popular that the cinema adverts are a waste of licence-payers’ money.
One viewer expressed disgust at the spending after contacting the Radio 4 Feedback show.
He said the BBC budget was meant for programming not advertising – and these budgets are already under pressure.
But Jackie Brandreth, the head of brand at the BBC, defended the spending, saying the corporation always spent a small proportion on its “off air” activities and this was an attempt to reach younger audiences.
She said: “The cinema is a pilot project to assess whether this is a good medium to talk to these younger audiences.”
A BBC spokesman said the cinema project had cost less than £500,000.
